Ploughing ahead with a big night in store

THE weather played spoilsport – with a vengeance – at this month’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show in Fossa but a big night out is in the pipeline as a consolation for some of the event’s great supporters.
The committee, sponsors and friends of the Killarney Valley Vintage and Veteran Club will gather in the Travel Inn, Fossa on Saturday, October 8 for the presentation of prizes and the handing over of cheques to the four chosen charities – the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Kerry Down Syndrome, Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association.
As a number of the planned events had to be cancelled on the day, when the heavens opened, the committee still has an abundance of terrific prizes to be given away and those in attendance on the presentation night could be going home very happy.
A bumper raffle will be held at the Travel Inn and the charities will benefit from the takings. Star prizes include a weekend break in The Maritime Hotel, Bantry, a night in the five-star Europe Hotel and Resort, dinner vouchers, a fabulous hamper from Foley’s Spar Fossa, a four ball at Beaufort Golf Course and tickets to top class shows at the INEC.
The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association will also be drawing the winners for their monster draw which included a stunning Ford Anglia vintage car which will be on show on the night.
The fun on Saturday, October 8 will commence at 8.00pm, there will be music and finger food and everybody is welcome.
Event chairman, Tom Leslie, has thanked everybody that attended and supported the ploughing and show on September 11, those who sponsored prizes, exhibitors and competitors and, particularly, all the volunteers who helped out on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event.

Two local charities, the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, will be the beneficiaries of this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show on Sunday, September 13.

A great family day out has been lined up at Fleming’s Farm in Grenagh, Fossa, Killarney and the big event is organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club.

The gates will open at 11.00am and visitors will be treated to a fantastic spectacle with a feast of quality activities. The event will be officially opened on the day by MEP and former President of the GAA Seán Kelly.

Details of this year’s show were revealed on Saturday at a reception in the Travel Inn, Killarney attended by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Bobby O’Connell, and Kerry Rose Julett Culloty.

The traditional art of ploughing will be a highlight and five local competitors – including two females – will test their skills against all challengers.

The trade show will be huge with close on 100 suppliers attending, including some of the premier firms in the plant machinery, agricultural and industrial sector.

A classic and vintage truck, tractor, car and motorcycle show, stationery engines, a silage cutting demonstration and poultry sales will also feature and there will be county sheepdog trials, a demonstration by a sheep shearing champion, exhibitions and novelties.

Children and the young at heart will be really well catered for in the super Kids’ Zone and funfair, including a novelty Maze in the Maize which proved so popular last year when the main beneficiary was the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus with the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association also benefiting from a cash donation.

The dedicated food zone will be very special this year with high quality produce, including a pig-on-a-spit, and no shortage of bales of straw seating.

Two fashion shows will take place during the course of the afternoon with Killarney Rotary Club taking care of the on-site style suite.

Kerry Rose Julett Culloty and her predecessor Mary Hickey will be there on the day to select the best-dressed woman and man, with great prizes up for grabs.

There will also be a bonny baby competition and the prize for the winner will see them being fully decked out in their county GAA colours.

Numerous demonstrations will take place, including masterclasses from celebrity chef Mark Doe, interior designer Ruth O’Grady and gardening expert Trish Wharton.

There will be live music, train tours of the sprawling venue to take in all the action, novelties, sideshows, competitions, celebrities and great prizes to be won, including a two-night stay in the Europe Hotel and Resort for the winner of a ‘name the peaks’ competition.

The event will be based on a 40-acre site at Fossa with an additional 50 acres allocated for car parking. All vehicles will be directed to the main car park which is on land owned by the Europe Hotel and Resort adjacent to Fleming’s farm.

The admission fee will be €10 for adults, €5 for OAPs and over 14s while children will be admitted free of charge.

Classic Car Show

There was a great turnout of over 120 cars last Sunday at a Classic Car Show organised by Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage in the Killarney Outlet Centre. It was the first static car show organised by the group and it went down a treat by both the car owners and the general public who came along in great numbers to view the cars.
Proceeds from the event will go to two worthy causes, the Kerry Mountain Rescue and the local branch of the Irish Kidney Association.
During the event, Seamus Weldon, the John Deere Lawn Equipment Dealer of Barleymount presented the organising committee with club jackets. The committee were also very grateful to receive high-vis vests from Kevin O’Connor of Signco which the stewards wore during the event.
The committee would like to thank Mr Paul Sherry of the Killarney Outlet Centre, the Retailers in the Centre and the Security Staff tor their support in hosting the event. Everyone commented that the venue was an ideal location for such an event. The committee would also like to thank Ahern’s BMW, Castleisland and the Killarney Advertiser for their support of the event.
Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage would very much like to thank all the car owners and clubs who attended the show.
