THE bumper crowd that turned out for this year’s hugely successful South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show ensured the year is ending on a very high note for two very deserving local charities.
The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association are the beneficiaries of the gala event which was held at Fleming’s Farm in Grenagh, Fossa in September.
Cheques were presented this week to representatives of both organisations as well as the prizewinners in the various ploughing competitions at a reception in the Travel Inn in Fossa.
A donation was also made to Killarney Rotary Club who staged the successful fashion show at the event.
Special guests on the night were MEP Seán Kelly and Kerry Rose Julett Culloty.
Event director, Tom Leslie, said everybody involved was “absolutely thrilled” with the success of this year’s event which, again, was organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Association.
“The success of the show just wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated committee that spent several weeks planning all aspects of the day. They were just fantastic and I thank them all for the huge effort they put in,” he said.
Tom also thanked the generous sponsors and the volunteers who ensured everything ran like clockwork. They included members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Ireland, the Killarney and District Motor Club, Fossa Rowing Club and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
There were a total of 142 trade stands on the day and all reported a brisk trade which augurs well for next year’s event.
